You may know about WGS Waste Management for being specialists in waste disposal in the South East of England, but did you know we also specialise in sustainable waste solutions?
The Importance of Sustainability
Sustainability is at the forefront of many of our minds because it is vital for a happier, healthier future for our planet and for the generations to come. Earth has finite resources and to protect these, and the environment around us, we need to work on being mindful of how we use these resources. The more materials we use, the more we need to dispose of, and this can contribute to pollution and the increase in greenhouse gases.
The Problems with Landfill
Landfills are quite the opposite of sustainable. Rubbish that goes to landfill can have disastrous effects on the environment and we need to prevent that effect from worsening. A report from 2016 stated that across the world, 2.01 billion tons of waste was created each year and that could go up by 2/3 in the next 30 years. At least 1/3 of the waste produced is NOT dealt with in a non-toxic way.
How WGS Waste Management Works in an Environmentally Friendly Way
We are wholly dedicated to working to support the environment and we focus our energy on disposing of waste in the least destructive ways for the planet. We take pride in the fact that nothing we collect goes to landfill. What we do with the waste is based on the type of waste being disposed of but it is either recycled, or taken for incineration or other process and either way, we ensure that it is reused as energy.
Confidential Waste
All confidential wastepaper collected by us is taken to UK paper mills to be recycled. In the UK, you are obligated to secure sensitive information about clients, staff or other related parties that you have information about. Therefore, it is essential to have confidential paper waste dealt with by a trustworthy organisation. At WGS, we serve the British Dental Association and the NHS, so you know that you’ll be in safe hands with us.
Amalgam and Mercury Vapour Suppressant
We deliver a variety of UN approved amalgam disposal collection containers. These secure the removal of amalgam guard, sludge, tooth boxes and capsules, which can all potentially have mercury within them. These containers prevent leaks and avoid any kind of damaging contact. They are then taken away for collection and recycled safely.
Incineration Process – Sharps, Pharmaceutical and Anatomical
Depending upon the waste being dealt with, it will be reused, recycled, composted or sent for energy recovery. You can have faith that we keep our ‘zero to landfill’ promise. It will be incinerated between 850-1000 degrees, this reduces the waste to just 10% of its original volume, transforming it into ash and lime. Both are then reused for other purposes. The heat and steam created are utilised for heating and electricity.
Orange Bag Waste – Alternative Treatment Process
Orange bag waste is shredded and then treated by heat disinfection. Following this, it is allowed to cool and then reduced into a bail. The bail is then utilised as fuel.
Orange Bag Waste and Offensive Waste – Sterilwave Process
This process is the most sustainable and compliant method to handle clinical waste. The Sterilwave system changes the waste into a ‘flock’ which is then sterilised and becomes a safe material to deal with. The final material can then be disposed of as fuel.
Air Fresheners
We offer emission free, solvent free and propellant free air fresheners and purifiers, which are 100% recyclable.
ISO 14001 Environmental Standard
We have also achieved the ISO 14001 environmental standard which means we have to maintain an environmental management system. This means we have had to show that we’re adhering to statutory regulations for good environmental management.
